The ATAB test detects anti-thyroid antibodies, specifically anti-TPO (thyroid peroxidase) and anti-Tg (thyroglobulin) antibodies, in serum or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). These antibodies indicate an autoimmune attack on the thyroid gland. It is primarily used to diagnose or monitor Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (hypothyroidism) and Graves’ disease (hyperthyroidism), as well as to assess risk in individuals with other autoimmune conditions. High levels suggest autoimmune thyroid disease, though some individuals may have antibodies without symptoms. Testing may also be done on CSF in rare cases of autoimmune encephalopathy. Results should be interpreted alongside clinical signs and thyroid hormone levels.
