Why calibration and proper setup matter
Calibration compares an instrument’s indication with a known reference so that its performance can be understood and, where possible, adjusted. Setup covers the practical work needed to make the equipment ready for use: site preparation, electrical and utility checks, assembly, software connection, configuration, method preparation, functional testing and user orientation. Together, these services reduce uncertainty and help laboratories avoid decisions based on misleading readings.
This is important because many errors are not dramatic. A balance may be slightly biased, an incubator may have temperature variation across the chamber, a pipette may dispense less than its selected volume, or a spectrophotometer may show wavelength or absorbance drift. Our calibration and setup process
The process begins with a technical review of the information submitted through the form. We examine the instrument type, make and model, location, required range, observed error, last calibration date, utilities, accessories, software and intended application. Photographs of the full unit, nameplate, display and connection points often help us determine site-readiness and prepare suitable tools or references.
For installation work, the site may be reviewed for power quality, earthing, ventilation, bench strength, room temperature, dust, vibration, water, drainage, gases, network access and safe clearance. The instrument is then assembled or positioned, connected, configured and tested. For calibration, readings are compared with appropriate references at relevant points. Adjustment is performed only where the design allows it and where doing so will not compromise manufacturer requirements.
At the end, the client receives a practical summary of work completed, observations, limitations and recommended next steps. What to prepare before requesting service
Provide the instrument name, manufacturer, model, serial number, present location and intended use. State the measurement range, accuracy or tolerance required, last calibration date, available standards and whether the equipment is new, relocated or already in operation. Include photographs and any error messages. For installation, tell us whether power, gas, water, drainage, extraction, computer, software licence and bench space are ready.
Do not hide previous work. Knowing that a board, sensor, lamp, pump, controller or software package has been changed can save hours of diagnosis. Do not share patient identifiers, passwords or confidential client results through the form.
ISO/IEC 17025 and accredited calibration
ISO/IEC 17025:2017 is the international standard used to assess the competence, impartiality and consistent operation of testing and calibration laboratories. Calibration certificates, traceability and verification
A calibration certificate should identify the instrument, reference standards, environmental conditions, results, uncertainty where applicable, date and responsible provider. However, a certificate alone does not make an instrument suitable for every purpose. The laboratory must compare the results with its own acceptance criteria. A device can be calibrated yet still fail the accuracy needed for a particular method.
For this reason, we encourage clients to define acceptance limits before work begins. Where suitable, a post-calibration verification or control run should be completed. Laboratories preparing for quality audits should also maintain an equipment register, calibration schedule, status labels, service history and procedures for handling equipment found outside tolerance.
Operator training and handover
Many setup problems begin after the technician leaves.
