Amylase Test (Any Body Fluid)
Purpose:
The amylase test measures the level of amylase, an enzyme that helps digest carbohydrates. It is mainly produced by the pancreas and salivary glands. Testing amylase in body fluids helps diagnose conditions like pancreatitis, salivary gland disorders, or abdominal fluid infections.

Sample Type:
Any body fluid such as:

Blood (serum/plasma)

Urine

Peritoneal (ascitic) fluid

Pleural fluid

Saliva

Pancreatic drainage

Why the Test is Done:
To diagnose or monitor acute or chronic pancreatitis

To evaluate abdominal pain or swelling

To detect leakage of pancreatic enzymes into surrounding fluids

To assess infection or inflammation in body cavities

Normal Ranges:
Varies by fluid type and lab

Example (serum): 30–110 U/L

Higher values may indicate pancreatic inflammation or damage

Important Notes:
Elevated amylase in pleural or peritoneal fluid may suggest pancreatitis or gastrointestinal perforation

Levels must be interpreted alongside other clinical findings and enzyme tests (like lipase)
